If no caching is configured on a Dataset, the default behaviour is that the API call or SQL Query will be executed in real-time against the data source.

While real-time execution of a dataset which is being used to provide data to a Fixed Format Report which is scheduled to be run outside of business hours or to provide the contents of a simple datamart table to a Nathean Analytics Spreadsheet in real time is unlikely to cause any problems, real consideration should be given to the impact such a live execution of a query may have on the source system (or the business application running against it) before proceeding with this configuration if any Views of the Dataset are to be added to a frequently used Dashboard in a production environment as this could result in a large number of queries being executed against the source database or API server which could have a negative impact on the performance of business applications.

In scenarios where Real Time data is required on dashboards, it is advised to ensure the query being executed is developed to be as performant as possible and that any database indexing which can assist is in place and up-to-date.
