To include run-time values in the query to limit or alter the results of the query, the Nathean Analytics developer can add a parameter by prefacing a keyword with a colon in the query e.g.

SELECT *
FROM TableName
WHERE ColumnName = :PARAMETER_NAME

After editing the query and clicking next onto the parameters step the following screen appears.

The parameters step will list any parameters defined in the query. On the main screen, a developer can edit the following parameter properties:

  • Order Changes the sort order of the parameters. It is important to ensure that each parameter on a dataset has a unique order number.
  • Name The name of the parameter as defined by the keyword in the query.
  • Label A more user-friendly name to be displayed to end users.
  • Data Type The data type of the parameter to be passed into the query.
  • Linked Allows the parameter to be linked to (or unlinked from) a previously defined instance of a parameter with the same name (allowing the parameter to inherit its properties from the master record).
  • Size The size of the parameter.
  • Default Display The value users will be shown when creating a new view with this dataset.
  • Default Value The default value that will be used for this parameter.

Clicking on Advanced will open a pop-up that allows further properties of the parameter to be set:

  • Visible determines if the parameter will be visible to end users. Checked by default but usually unchecked for User Parameters being used for Data Access Control
  • Mandatory indicates that a dataset should not run unless a value is specified for this parameter.
  • Quick Find is a legacy property for the Nathean Analytics Desktop application that allows one parameter on each Dataset to display at the top of the screen
  • User Parameter is checked to indicate that the parameter should take it’s run-time value from the End User’s defined User Parameter or IP Parameter
  • Parameter Type changes the interface a user will see when entering a value for the parameter:
Text Displays a simple Text Box
Boolean Displays a True/False Check Box
    Date Displays a Calendar
Fixed List Displays a drop-down list defined list of acceptable values
Lookup Displays a drop-down list of acceptable values determined by another Dataset
  • Precision Value the number of decimal places to include in a numeric Parameter value.
